8 statements on the Kingdom of God

by Derek Brown

My desire to promote the message of the Kingdom involves refining and developing the way this truth is expressed. Recently I have been working on a simple summary of the key elements of a Kingdom theology which has led to the following 8 statements.
  • Kingdom is the sovereign rule of God
  • Kingdom is a present reality
  • Church is not the Kingdom
  • Kingdom of God is within every person
  • Kingdom happens outside the church
  • Kingdom is expressed in a variety of passions
  • Kingdom fruit is more than evangelism
  • Every Christian is an agent for the Kingdom

I have just had the opportunity to present these 8 principles at RiverCity Family church in Brisbane.

Your Kingdom come

by Ric Benson

Ric Benson, senior pastor of Kenmore Baptist church, has written a very insightful synopsis of the Kingdom message, with particular application for Christian leaders. Here is an extract:

“It is impossible to understand the purpose and mission of the local church without understanding the purpose and characteristics of the kingdom of God. It is also impossible to fulfil the Great Commission – to make disciples where we are by living under God’s rule and reign (Matthew 28 and Mark 16), the Great Commandment – to impart God’s unconditional love through our lives (John 13), the Cultural Mandate – to be engaged in and with the world but not conformed to its lifestyle (John 17), the Creation Mandate – to exercise responsible dominion over the physical world (Genesis 2), or to outwork the prayer Jesus taught His disciples to pray which included the phrase “God’s will be done on earth as it is in Heaven”, without understanding what the kingdom of God really means.”

This is an excellent resource paper in that it has an extensive bibliography and discussion questions for groups to use.

Building Monday’s church

by Brian Medway

Brian Medway from Canberra is a leader who is passionate to see the church recapture the dynamic of the Kingdom message. Working with leaders from his network of churches called Crosslink Brian is exploring ways that the Kingdom can be fleshed out in practical terms. In this article – entitled Building Monday’s church – Brian calls on church leaders to reassess their focus from what happens on Sunday to what happens amongst their people on Monday. Here is an extract.

“The term Monday Church is used here to refer to everything that individual believers or groups of believers do in the wider community when they are not engaged in Sunday Church activities….Monday Church refers to intentional kingdom of God activity designed to bring all aspects of a particular sphere of the community under the rule of God. Home Extended family Neighbourhood Workplace Community groups (hobby, sport or other) Intentional targeted groups Groups of friends or acquaintances…Monday Church is about kingdom ministry influence not institutional structure”
