Emerging churches and the Kingdom

 

Brian McLaren is one of the leading exponents of what has come to be called the ‘emergent’ church movement. In this article Scot McNight examines McLaren’s teaching and raises some issues he would like McLaren to address. As part of this review McNight documents the emphasis on the Kingdom that is present amongst many ‘emergent’ writers. Here is an extract.

“McLaren’s vision is, simply, to return to Jesus and to rework and revitalize Jesus’ kingdom vision. In The Secret Message of Jesus, McLaren explores a variety of phrases,including “empire of God,” “dream of God,” “revolution of God,” “mission of God,” “party of God,” the “network of God,” and the “dance of God.”….. “McLaren believes Jesus’ kingdom vision is bigger than what many are accustomed to think. “I’ve been convinced that [Jesus' message] has everything to do with public matters in general and politics in particular-including economics and aid, personal empowerment and choice, foreign policy and war.”….In the words of Justine, a Burundian living in Rwanda and from whom the title of this book comes, “I see what Jesus meant by the kingdom of God. I see that it’s about changing this world, not just escaping it and retreating into our churches. If Jesus’ message of the kingdom of God is true, then everything must change. Everything must change.”

Building Monday’s church

Another Brian, Brian Medway from Canberra is a leader who is passionate to see the church recapture the dynamic of the Kingdom message. Working with leaders from his network of churches called Crosslink Brian is exploring ways that the Kingdom can be fleshed out in practical terms. In this article – entitled Building Monday’s church – Brian calls on church leaders to reassess their focus from what happens on Sunday to what happens amongst their people on Monday. Here is an extract.

“The term Monday Church is used here to refer to everything that individual believers or groups of believers do in the wider community when they are not engaged in Sunday Church activities….Monday Church refers to intentional kingdom of God activity designed to bring all aspects of a particular sphere of the community under the rule of God. Home Extended family Neighbourhood Workplace Community groups (hobby, sport or other) Intentional targeted groups Groups of friends or acquaintances…Monday Church is about kingdom ministry influence not institutional structure”

    The Kingdom and You
