Kingdom on Monday

Recently I presented two messages on the Kingdom at my local church Goodlife Community on the Sunshine Coast. Since I am doing my own PR it was encouraging to receive some positive feedback. “Best sermons I have ever heard….brilliant…top shelf” I mention this because I feel the message on the Kingdom for me is finding more clarity and direction as I continue to develop the seed thoughts God has given. There is much more to be developed but progress is being made.

Emerging churches and the Kingdom of God

Brian McLaren is one of the leading exponents of what has come to be called the ‘emergent’ church movement. In this article Scot McNight examines McLaren’s teaching and raises some issues he would like McLaren to address. As part of this review McNight documents the emphasis on the Kingdom that is present amongst many ‘emergent’ writers. Here is an extract.

“McLaren’s vision is, simply, to return to Jesus and to rework and revitalize Jesus’ kingdom vision. In The Secret Message of Jesus, McLaren explores a variety of phrases,including “empire of God,” “dream of God,” “revolution of God,” “mission of God,” “party of God,” the “network of God,” and the “dance of God.”….. “McLaren believes Jesus’ kingdom vision is bigger than what many are accustomed to think. “I’ve been convinced that [Jesus' message] has everything to do with public matters in general and politics in particular-including economics and aid, personal empowerment and choice, foreign policy and war.”….In the words of Justine, a Burundian living in Rwanda and from whom the title of this book comes, “I see what Jesus meant by the kingdom of God. I see that it’s about changing this world, not just escaping it and retreating into our churches. If Jesus’ message of the kingdom of God is true, then everything must change. Everything must change.”
